Remedial teaching in native language

Under the Basic Education Act, § 16, those temporarily falling behind in their studies or otherwise in need of remedial teaching must receive remedial teaching. It applies to immigrant pupils too. Remedial teaching can be given in Finnish but also in the pupil's native  language. Teaching is provided either before, simultaneously or after the material is taught in Finnish.

The provider of the teaching may also apply for separate state aid from the National Board of Education, intended for remedial teaching for immigrants. Pupils who have immigrated maximum four years ago are at the moment entitled to remedial teaching for immigrants.
